Lot Essay

Antoine Capelle is recorded at Sèvres as having painted flowers, patterns, ground colours and feathering and as a gilder 1745-1787, 1790.

Boat-shaped dishes such as the present example, used for holding bitter lemons and oranges, are described in inventories of dessert services such as the Service des Asturies. The shape was also used as a tray to hold a matching cup and sugar-bowl. See Tamara Préaud and Antoine d'Albis, La porcelaine de Vincennes, Paris, 1991, pp. 42, 161, no. 140.
