Lot Essay

Vincenzo Irolli, one of the most beloved Neapolitan artists of the 19th Century, made his mark on the international artistic community with a unique style characterized by his vibrant use of color and loose and spontaneous brushwork. Having shown remarkable talent even as a child, he went on to produce a large body of work whose focus was the true depiction of the everyday life and struggles of the 'popolane' or working class. The present work is a wonderful example of this vibrancy of color and brushwork working in complete harmony to depict a solitary fisher girl on a sunny day.
