The Burmeisterella genus from the Devonian period of Morocco was a trilobite of truly gigantic proportions. Once predatory ocean dwellers, they are now immortalised in limestone deposits of approximately some 400 million years ago. The location of the finds are in the western Sahara desert, an area deep in the south-eastern region of Morocco, in the province of Errachidia. This area tucked up to the Algerian border is the Mecca for trilobites of Morocco: vast areas of desert scrub interrupted occasionally with an outcrop of low lying hills, or mountain ranges, djebel. In such geological formations we find the beds of oceans laid down eons ago as silts and compressed over time, entombing the wonderful remains of these ancient invertebrates. An extremely well-defined specimen offered here, these very rare and massive trilobites are often found as pieces then reconstructed into a whole specimen.
