Jedburgh Abbey is situated on the north bank of the Jed Water. It was founded, intially as a priory by King David I in 1138, probably on the site of a church used by Bichop Ecgred of Lindisfarne in 830. English attacks on Jedburgh caused the abbey to fall into disrepair and by the time of the reformation the building was a shell with services forced to take place in the most habitable part of the building, the tower.
