Lot Essay

Lodge was a contemporary and friend of Archibald Thorburn who acknowledged him as a masterful painter. Lodge wrote and illustrated Memoirs of an Artist Naturalist and, at the age of 81, he embarked on a major venture with D.A. Bannerman, providing illustrations for The Birds of the British Isles which was published in twelve volumes between 1953 and 1963, and on which Lodge was working right up to the end of his life.
