Lot Essay

Gauld was apprenticed to a lithographer and started his work with pen-and-ink illustrations. Always interested in the decorative possibilities of painting rather than in social comment, he also designed stained-glass windows. Gauld's reputation was firmly established with his sensitive and detailed paintings of cattle and calves in landscapes.
