Lot Essay

Beaton taught at the Edinburgh College of Art and one of her students, Elizabeth Blackadder recalls her 'at first an immensely tall and commanding figure and a stern teacher', but also someone who was extremely interested in her students and encouraging in their futures. It was Beaton who prompted Blackadder to send her work into the Scottish Society of Artists and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours, thus beginning her exhibiting career.
