A RARE INFANTRY 'MORNING STAR', NORTH EUROPEAN; AND A MILITARY FLAIL
The first late 16th Century: the second 17th Century
The first with turned wooden barrel-shaped head with traces of an early painted finish, fitted with an iron central band carrying four long sharply tapering spikes, an additional reinforcing band top and bottom and the top with iron facing plate pierced by a central spike of square section on a wooden staff, possibly the original, with four long wavy straps: and the second with simple head formed of a piece of iron roundshot encased by bars linked to a chain and secured to its staff by a staple.

Lot Essay

So-called 'Morning Stars' of similar construction were used by the Vienna City Guard in 1571, an example of which is preserved in the Vienna Zeughaus collection (Inv.Nr. 126.207). A differing example is in the Royal Armouries collection, Leeds (VII-1343)
