Accompanied by a copy of the original drawing no. 9.963 confirming that the present clock was made for Greenleaf, Crosby & Co. after Georges Verger's design and fitted with a movement by Vacheron Constantin. Furthermore delivered with a Vacheron Constantin fitted presentation box containing a gilt key.
This highly unusual and decorative timepiece was certainly made by special order for an elephant loving client of Greenleaf, Crosby & Co. Throughout most cultures, the elephant is a symbol for wisdom, strength, intelligence, longevity and power. It is one of Buddha's sacred treasures and is thus considered a Celestial animal in Buddhism. Ganesh, the Hindu god of wisdom, has an elephant's head. The elephant is also the national symbol of Thailand. Last but not least it is considered a strong symbol of luck - it is said that an elephant symbol in a house will protect its inhabitants while bringing luck.
