Lot Essay

Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial, pink gold numerals and outer dot minute track in 1956 and its subsequent sale on 28 November 1956.

The large Calatrava model reference 570 was introduced to the market in 1938, featuring either subsidiary or sweep centre seconds, the latter with caliber 12 SC or 27 SC. It was made in stainless steel, stainless and gold, yellow, pink and white gold and platinum.

The present watch, fitted with caliber 27 SC, is particularly rare as cased in pink gold. To date, only 6 examples of this centre seconds version in pink gold have been offered at auction. The present watch, consigned by a private, has never been offered publicly before.

The back bears the engraved signature of Josip Broz Tito, better known as Marshal Tito, who established in 1948 the independence of Yugoslavia from the U.S.S.R. Tito was also the first President of Yugoslavia from 1953-1980. It appears that he regularly ordered watches at Patek Philippe which were then engraved with a facsimile of his signature and presented as gifts.
