Lot Essay

From an early age Davis studied under Robert Henri and was thus encouraged to produce expressive works of art while being influenced by subject matter taken from the world around him. Davis based this work on an actual location and the theater in the background is the Theatre de l'Atelier located in the Monmartre district. Davis was fascinated with Synthetic Cubism which is evident by the balancing of geometric forms as well as the contrasting areas of black and white. This print, typical of the artist's style, portrays his skill as an innovative artist in both style and technique, since lithography was considered to be a modern medium.
