Portrait de Miss Davis was a gift from the artist to an American journalist and writer, the early Virginia Davis, wife of renowned American realist and abstract painter Lee F. Hersch. Zarraga painted this portrait in the 1920s and the couple later pertained to Zarraga's close circle of friends.

Virginia Hersch is the author of Woman under glass: Saint Teresa of Avila, among other books.
