Established in Leeds in 1847 the Band of Hope was a temperance organisation for children. Members were enrolled from the age of six and met once a week to listen to lectures and participate in activities. Fifty years later the movement had regular contact with 10 per cent of the total population. There were over 10,000 weekly Band of Hope groups. A school lecturer service was provided in many parts of the country and teaching aids printed for Sunday Schools.
The Band of Hope was an early adopter of the magic lantern as a means of promoting it's cause and established it's own slide library and lantern hire service for member groups around the UK.

The Band of Hope continues today as Hope UK.
