Lot Essay

The present watercolour was in the collection of Victor Winthrop Newman (b.1860); an artist, illustrator and passionate watercolour collector. He collected both Old Master and modern drawings. His collection including 85 of his English drawings was sold at the Anderson Galleries, New York, in 1920. It has been suggested that the subject matter may be Diana and Callisto.
