Lot Essay

Pinwell was part of the group known as the 'Idyllic School' along with Frederick Walker (1840-1875), George du Maurier (1834-1896), John William North (1842-1924) and Arthur Boyd Houghton (1836-1875) amongst others. Although they had imbibed some of the ideas of the Pre-Raphaelites, they concentrated on more everyday life and contemporary scenes, though their depictions were often as poetic or intense as those medieval ones painted by the Pre-Raphaelites.

The present watercolour is a particularly fine example of Pinwell's art. He has used one of his favourite techniques of turning his characters faces away from the viewers, creating an air of drama in the watercolour. Pinwell began his career as a woodblcok engraver for the Dalziel Brothers, to whom the present watercolour belonged. He exhibited watercolours at the Dudley Gallery in 1865 and was elected as a Member of the Old Water-colour Society in 1870.
