Lot Essay

La ménagère was exhibited at the Salon of 1897 and illustrated in the Salon catalogue as one of the higlights of the show. The work is an iconic example of Joseph Bail's painting and testifies to his deep interest in furthering the popular realist tradition as well as the craft of painting itself. In its composition and emphasis on surface textures and reflections, the work is also a testimony to Bail's veneration of painters such as Jean-Siméon Chardin and the Dutch masters of the 17th Century.
