MÜNSTER, Sebastian (1489-1552). Horologiographia. Basel: Henricus Petrus, August 1533.
4° (188 x 144mm). Roman and italic types. Large title woodcut, 59 (of 60) full-page and 7 half-page woodcut diagrams, 12 full-page woodcuts of the astrological signs, partly by Hans Holbein the younger, woodcut printer's device at end, ALL WOODCUTS FULLY COLOURED AND WITH GOLD HEIGHTENING by a near contemporary hand. (Lacking oo4 [folding woodcut], stain at inner hinge from quire n with a little damage in 5 leaves, front joint splitting, c2.3 almost loose.) 18th-century German orange-stained vellum, green edges (rubbed). Provenance: several laudata and testimonials on Münster and his near-contemporary fellow German mathematicians, such as Sebald Ebner, and Georg Hartmann (1489-1564), the renowned and prolific instrument-maker of Nuremberg, written in the second half of the 16th century.
SECOND, AUGMENTED, EDITION of Münster's work on sundials. The folding plate of a wall-mounted sun-dial is often missing, as here. Brunet III, 1944; Burmeister, Sebastian Münster, 1964, 50; Wellcome 4476; Zinner 1538.
