MELA, Pomponius. De Orbis situ libri tres. Basel: Andreas Cratander, [1522].
2° (305 x 195mm). 2 parts in one volume. Title with woodcut historiated border signed HF, woodcut printer's device on final leaf, double page woodcut cordiform map of the world. (Margins of map skilfully restored, affecting some letters, new guard, some light staining to lower margins of text.) Contemporary blindstamped panelled German pigskin (slightly soiled and rubbed, ties lacking, foot of spine repaired). Provenance: Convent of St Joseph, Innsbruck (inscription at upper margin of title).
AN IMPORTANT WORK INCLUDING PETER APIAN'S FAMOUS MAP OF THE WORLD, Tipus Orbis Universalis iuxta Ptolomei Cosmographi ... MDXX, which is considered to be the earliest 'commonly' available map to show the name America. The map is found in some of these Basel editions of Mela and in the 1520 Vienna editions of Solinus's Geography. The practice of inserting world maps in geographical texts flourished in the early 16th-century, in many cases being one of the few ways that these rare maps have survived down the years.
