A RARE LARGE RU-TYPE GLAZED HU-FORM VASE
YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER SEALMARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)

The vase of hu form, supported on a flared foot rising to rounded sides and a waisted neck flaring at the mouth, the shoulders flanked by moulded stylised dragon handles, the exterior further decorated with raised straps and bosses in imitation of bronze vessels, covered overall in a light lavender-blue glaze suffused with fine crackles, the unglazed footring painted with a dark brown slip

Lot Essay

The present vase is of an exceptionally large size. Comparable vases of this form and with this glaze but of smaller size are known: one is included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Government Exhibits for the International Exhibition of Chinese Art in London, 1935, vol. II, no. 214; and another is illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art: Chinese Ceramics IV, Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 21.

Smaller vases of this form with ge-type glazes include one in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Kangxi Yongzheng Qianlong, Hong Kong, 1989, p. 260. no. 89; and another in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, illustrated by M. Beurdeley and G. Raindre, Qing Porcelain, pl. 217.
