Lot Essay

Jiao Bing Zhen is born in the Shandong Province. He was a court painter during Kangxi reign, from 1680 to 1720. He is mainly known for the drawings he executed in 1696 and which were used as models for the 46 engravings of the Geng Zhitu (album illustrating the work at the fiels and the sericulture). This album had been given by Emperor Kangxi to important court members and provincial officials.
Jiao Bing Zhen was trained by the Jesuits to the 'western manner' in painting. He learned how to use perspective and chiaroscuro.
The current scroll has been executed in Yuan style. Paintings of horses were particularly appreciated during the Yuan dynasty. An example is the one from Zhao Meng Fu, entitled 'The Horse Bath', illustrated in Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, Beijing, Zhaohua, Publishing House 1984, pl.26
