Lot Essay

The present composition is based on numerous compositions by Jan Brueghel the Younger, as for example the painting formerly in the Ardenne collection, Dordrecht (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Jüngere: Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Freren, 1984, pp. 450-1, no. 287, illustrated); the painting sold at Sotheby's, London, 14 December 2000, lot 10 and the painting sold at Christie's, New York, 17 June 2004, lot 23. Other versions are known, mostly by anonymous followers of Jan Brueghel the Elder (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere: Die Gemälde mit kritischem Oeuvrekatalog, Cologne, 1979, pp. 294-5, figs. 368-70).
