Lot Essay

This fascinating study of three sealers trapped in the pack-ice off the Devil's Thumb, in the Gulf of Alaska, is an extremely unusual and possibly unrecorded subject for a reverse glass painting. So far untraced, the name of the artist (Baervoets) suggests he may have been a Belgian, perhaps working with or alongside his more famous compatriot Petrus Nefors (1790-1876) who produced many striking glass paintings in the period 1830-50.
