Lot Essay

Designed by the great G.L. Watson of Glasgow, the steam yacht Cleopatra was built by Hamilton, Bridge & Co. at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1893. Rigged as a screw schooner, she was registered at 104½ tons gross (71 net & 147 Thames) and measured 113½ feet in length with a 17 foot beam. Powered by a 32hp. 3-cylinder engine by the Kerr Engine Co. of Walkerville, Ontario, Cleopatra clearly gave satisfaction since her original owner Albert E. Gooderham of Toronto kept her until at least 1914 when she passed into the hands of George H. Gooderham (his son?), also of Toronto. Eventually sold out of the family to J.R. Kennedy of Toronto in the mid-1920s, she finally disappears from record around 1930.
