the carved hull finished in cream, black and varnish with deck fittings including wood-capped hand-rails, lifeboat and winches, mounted on a back-silvered mirror in wooden case for wall hanging (parts replaced including mirror and case, lacks builder's plate, name re-applied, evidence of warpage and re-varnishing) -- 16 x 55½in. Lot Essay

Apparently the iron screw steamer built by Short Bros. at Sunderland in 1887 and launched under the name Belle of Dunkerque. Registered at 527 tons gross (323 net) and measuring 180 feet in length with a 25 foot beam, her original owners -- Weatherley, Mead & Hussey of London -- only kept her for a year or two before selling her to the Belgian Congo Railways (Cie. du Chemin de Fer du Congo) at which time she was renamed Le Souverain and re-registered in Antwerp.
