The first a slightly dished oval shibuichi plate carved in shishiaibori and inlaid in low relief copper, shakudo and gilt with two Nio arm-wrestling, the second a mokkogata shibuichi plate carved in low relief with a samurai raising his hat, gilt and shakudo details

Lot Essay

The legend on the second tsuba probably refers to Ota Dokan, who called at a country inn to request the loan of a mino [raincoat]. Instead, the maid brought him a spray of yamabuki [wild rose] on an open fan. At first angry, he then realized her reference to a poem, 'Although having many petals, to our great regret, the yamabuki has no seed', the pun being on the mino, which can mean both raincoat and seed.
