This sale features 27 vintages of Pétrus and Latour, from the iconic 2000 Millennium vintage back to 1964. Identical quantities and large formats from each property are on offer. The wines will be shipped directly from the cellars of Château Latour and the cellars of Château Pétrus. This event is dedicated to the memory of Jean-Louis Marquis de Roux, who died in December 2004. He was a close friend of the owners of both Châteaux. If we consider the great wines of Bordeaux over the last 40 years, one Château has never ceased to be in the spotlight, centre-stage: Château Pétrus, in Pomerol. Until the second half of the 20th century, it had not really come to prominence: fashions favoured the red wines of Bordeaux's Left Bank, the Haut-Médoc and Graves. Château Pétrus was owned by Madame Loubat, a legendary figure in Pomerol. She passed away in 1961, and it was inherited by her niece and nephew. In 1964 the nephew's interests in the property were acquired by Monsieur Jean-Pierre Moueix, and at a later stage the family acquired the other half. Jean-Pierre Moueix had become established as the leading wine-shipper of Bordeaux's Right Bank. It was the personal involvement of the visionary Jean-Pierre Moueix, with his two sons Jean-François and Christian, and their skilful teams in vineyard and wine-cellar, which took Pétrus to prominence. The Pétrus vineyard is situated on a clay knoll, in the middle of the gravelly plateau of Pomerol. It is planted principally with the Merlot grape, complemented by Cabernet Franc. Its wines are the purest, most spectacular expression of Pomerol - sumptuous, intense, majestic and very long lived. The great red wines of Bordeaux's Left Bank vineyards extend from the gates of the city to the northern Haut-Médoc. One château stands out for the powerful nature of its personality, and for the majestic way in which it expresses the character of its singular situation. Château Latour lies in Pauillac, on perfectly drained, gravel hillocks, in full sight of the estuary of the Gironde, which confers a precious, moderating influence on the gently sloping vineyards. It was first heard of in 1378, when the Anglo-Gascon army established a garrison there. In 1670 it belonged to the Marquis de Ségur - known as 'Prince of the Vines'- then to his heirs for 293 years. Its reputation for making wines of great colour, complex purity of fruit and powerful, long-lasting character was established in the 19th century. In 1855, at the time of the classification of the greatest wines of the Médoc and Graves for the International Exhibition in Paris, Château Latour was classified as a First Growth. After 30 years under British stewardship from 1963, Château Latour returned to French hands when it was purchased by Monsieur François Pinault in 1993. The latter's family-owned company, Artémis, is the owner of Christie's. While objectivity is not possible when writing about Latour, I must record the facts that an entirely new team has been carefully chosen, and that important renovations have been undertaken in vat-rooms and cellars. There is passionate pursuit of excellence throughout the property, and the resulting wines infallibly add radiance to Château Latour's centuries-old, extraordinary reputation. Highlights of the sale include, from both Pétrus and Latour: Magnums 1964, 1978, 1985 & 1998; Double-Magnums 1995 & 2000; Jeroboams 1975 & 1982; Impérials 1981, 1986 & 1995, along with full cases bottles 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1998 & 2000. The wines consigned have lain untouched at the estates since bottling, so condition and provenance are therefore without parallel Anthony Hanson M.W.

1964 Vintage Report: Dismiss the idea that this was anything other than a very good vintage. Nevertheless, it must be admitted that the very best '64s were made to the south of the Médoc, in the Graves, and on the Right Bank some outstanding Pomerols and Saint-Emilions. M.B.
Château Latour--Vintage 1964
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Tasting note: Latour 1964: Vying with Petrus as the finest '64.A large number of notes, over 30, starting with a very attractive 'sweet fruity' cask sample in April 1965. Good but still austere and unready in the early 1970's, though later 'like a '59', and in 1978 'will probably develop like the '43s' - by which I meant rich but blunt. Its nose and taste opened up, demonstrating its flesh and rich character through the 1980's. Tasted or drunk on a dozen occasions in the 1990's, all very good indeed save for an oxidised bottle. If anything goes to show an immense difference bottle age can do to a top-class claret, the continuing evolution of the '64 Latour is the perfect example. It goes on and on gaining extra dimensions. On the last three occasions a marvellous mouthful, plump, perfectly balanced, rounded and sweet yet still with a tannic finish. Then a tasting for the Bar Bank in Zurich in 1998, losing its pristine depth of colour. A bouquet of cedar and old oak (the tree not the cask). Fully mature, lovely flavour. Most recently showing well at Paolo Pong's dinner tasting. Oct 2000. ***** M.B.
