In 1917, Churchill bought Lullenden Manor near East Grinstead in East Sussex so that his wife and children would be safe from Zeppelin raids on London. The house was within easy reach of London so he could visit at weekends and paint. There are several paintings from the time at Lullenden, one a sketch of the house (Coombs C143) is on loan to the National Trust, Chartwell. The Churchills lived very happily at Lullenden until financial difficulties forced its sale in 1920. It was bought by his friend Sir Ian Hamilton (see D. Coombs, loc. cit,. p. 23).
