Lot Essay

A bronze figure of Field Marshall Smuts, South African Prime Minster, 1919-1924 and 1939-1948, was commissioned by the Office of Works in 1953. The finished piece, over life-size, was unveiled in Parliament Square, London, on 7 November 1956.

Two plasters of the head only were made, the present work and another in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
