Lot Essay

The present owner's grandparents and Ben Nicholson were staying at Hathersage, Derbyshire as guests of Mr Gunter Nagelschmidt and his wife Betty in March 1954. During Nicholson's stay, he completed this work and gave it to the present owner's grandfather.

Nicholson had introduced the idea of a light oil wash into his pencil drawings in the late 1940s. The technique meant preparing the paper with a thinned oil wash before embarking on drawing.
