ENCYCLOPEDIE OU DICTIONNAIRE RAISONNE DES SCIENCES, DES ARTS ET DES METIERS

Recueil de planches, sur les Sciences, les Arts Liberaux, et les Arts Méchaniques. Paris: Briasson, 1771. Extract from vol. VIII, folio (40.3 x 25.3cm), with half-title, title, one-leaf plate list headed "Paumier", and 9 engraved plates by Benard after Lucotte (block split in several places), contemporary marbled wrappers.

Diderot and D'Alembert's Encyclopédie, the greatest literary enterprise of the 18th century, was first published in 28 vols., 1751-1772, the tennis engravings first appearing in vol. IV of the plates issued in 1765. This is a COMPLETE SET OF THE PLATES, with the explanation but otherwise without text. The differences between the 9 plates in the Encylopédie and the 5 plates in de Garsault's book are discussed in Lord Aberdare's Tennis and Rackets, p. 62.
