A French gilt-brass striking and repeating carriage clock with alarm and automaton singing bird, circa 1860
The case with foliate cast mounts to the angles and resting on bun feet, mirror-back rear door, with gilt and florally engraved mask to white enamel Roman chapter disc, blued steel Breguet hands and sweep seconds, alarm disc below, the glazed upper section with mirror-back rear door and housing a bird which moves side to side and up and down amongst naturalistic foliage, the eight day twin barrel movement with silvered platform to bimetallic lever balance, strike/repeat/alarm on bell to back plate stamped for JAPY FRÈRES and numbered 987, the base housing the barrel and bellows for the singing bird, wound from the side and with stop-start lever -- 12 in. (30.5 cm.) high, handle down; two keys
