A PAIR OF GREEK GOLD AND GARNET EARRINGS
HELLENISTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 2ND-1ST CENTURY B.C.
Each in the form of a sphinx standing on a rectangular plinth, her wings upraised, the feathers detailed with twisted wire, adorned with a diadem and twisted wire bands that cross her chest and wrap around the tops of her forelegs, centered by a circular bezel between the breasts, the stone now missing, the tips of the wings joined to an oval bezel with a twisted wire fringe, set with a cabochon garnet, topped with an Egyptianizing crown, its tail serving as the large tapering ear hoop, framed by spiral wires and hooked through a loop at the top of the crown; joined to modern gold ear posts
