Lot Essay

It has been suggested that this portrait depicts Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (1820-1904), the daughter of Napolean's brother Jérôme Bonaparte and his second wife Catherine of Württemberg. The painting, dated 1852, may commemorate the coronation of Napolean III, the sitter's cousin.
