Lot Essay

Catherine II issued and ukaz in 1777 commissioning porcelain services for the Orders of St. George, St. Andrew and St. Alexander Nevski from the Gardner Factory. The designs were uniquely Russian, rather than copies of European porcelain, and were devised with the Badge, Order and Ribbon of each order. The services were for use each year on the Feast Day of each Saint, at a special banquet held at the Winter Palace attended by the Knights of the relevant Order.

The Service for St. George was completed for sixty knights in November 1778. The services for the Order of St. Andrew and St. Alexander Nevskii, for thirty knights each, were completed in 1780.

The success of this commission lead Catherine II to issue a further ukaz in 1783 for the Order of St. Vladimir, which was completed in 1785, for the one hundred and forty Knights.
