Lot Essay

In 1890 the Imperial Porcelain Factory and the Imperial Glass Factory were combined under the director, Guryev. The Raphael Service was the most important and largest table service commissioned by Alexander III in the late 19th century and finished in 1903. The designs are taken from actual size copies of the Raphael frescoes in the Vatican, which were made with permission of the Pope and housed by Quarenghi in the Winter Palace, during the reign of Catherine II.
