by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, period of Alexander III, 1893, with later blue overglaze Lomonosov Porcelain Factory mark of Hammer, Sickle and Cog, dated 1926
Circular, 'The Decembrists', after Sergei Chekhonin, the centre painted with the profiles of the five executed Decembrists in grey against a burst of puce on white ground, with the dates '1825' and '1925' above and below, in a ciselé gilt and green oak leaf wreath, the border inscribed in Russian 'You Did Not Die In Vain' above and 'What You Sowed Will Grow' above with a hammer and oak spray and a sickle and head of wheat between, gilt rim, marked under base
13 in. (33 cm.) diam.

Provenance

Purchased from the State Porcelain factory circa 1923-1924 by Thomas Preston, the British Honorary Consul in Petrograd.

Lot Essay

The group portrait represents profiles of the five executed Decembrists: Pavel Pestel, Kondrati Ryleyev, Sergei Muravyov-Apostol, Mikhail Bestuzhev-Riumin and Pyotr Kakhovskii. Other conspirators were exiled to Siberia.
