Lot Essay

A closely related secrétaire à abattant attributed to Jean-Henri Riesener is in the Wallace collection, London. Described as a bonheur du jour when lent by the 4th Marquess of Hertford to the Musée Rètrospectif in 1865, it has the same distinctive oval upper section with fall front and spreading canted angles above a rectangular 'table' base with chamfered corners and tapering legs joined by a galleried undertier (P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection: Catalogue of Furniture, London, 1996, vol. II, cat. 197, pp. 997-989).
