Lot Essay

Charles Topino, maître in 1773.
Roger Van der Cruse dit Lacroix, maître in 1755.

This elegant table à écrire illustrated the skill of Charles Topino for the small guéridons or tables. It is very closely related to a table stamped by him, sold Sotheby's, London, 8 December 1995, lot 159.
Topino is known to have often worked for his fellow ébéniste Lacroix who did also work as a marchand. Several pieces showing this collaboration are stamped by both ébénistes. Interestingly, the bois de bout ornament which decorates the undertier of this table is of a design much appreciated by Lacroix. It appears as an example on a bonheur-du-jour illustrated in C. Roinet, Roger Vandercruse dit La Croix, Paris, 2000, p. 51.
