Lot Essay

Betty Compson (1897-1974) was a successful silent-screen actress. Her big break was playing opposite Lon Chaney in The Miracle Man, 1918. Six years later, she starred in The Enemy Sex, a risqué, pre-Hays Code tale of four men fighting over the affections of a beautiful woman. The film was based on Owen Johnson's book The Salamander, and was directed by James Cruze, who later married Compson.
