PUCCINI, Giacomo (1848-1924). Two autograph letters signed ('Giacomo Puccini', 'G. Puccini' and 'P') to Tito Ricordi, Torre del Lago, 29 March and 20 October 1911, on letter-cards, together two pages, 8vo.

Help for an old collaborator, La Fanciulla del West and Toscanini. In October 1911 Puccini writes with bad news of [Carlo] Carignani, 'who is absolutely without work and it pains me to see him like that. He does not have the courage to tell me himself'; Pucccini asks Tito to 'do me the kindness of sending him some artists who wish to study La Fanciulla', and communicates Carignani's sad reminiscences of the times when 'Sig. Giulio [Ricordi] used to send dozens and dozens of artists to his house'. He laments that 'maestri di canto are worth almost nothing now' -- he hears the same thing from Toscanini. A letter of March the same year refers to some business in Rome which is 'molto imbrogliato' and adds 'I believe I shall come to Rome and we shall talk'.

Carlo Carignani (1857-1919), initially a singing master, made the piano arrangement for Edgar, and worked in some capacity for Puccini for the next 20 years. (2)
