FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY AUDEN on the front free endpaper: "Caroline Newton with love and best wishes from Wystan Auden." And with ink corrections by Auden (one each) on pp. 17, 24, 69 and 133. Caroline Newton, daughter of A. Edward Newton, was a good friend of Auden's. His war poem "In War Time" is dedicated to her, and in 1941 he let her issue his "Three Songs for St. Cecilia's Day" as a Christmas greeting leaflet. Bloomfield & Mendelson A24a.
