BATES, Herbert Ernest (1905-1974). Two autographed manuscripts signed, "A Flower Piece," May 1931, 10 pages; and "Death in Spring," June 1931, 18 pages. Together 28 pages, 4to, quarter morocco slipcase.

Both manuscripts, closely written in ink, show numerous corrections and revisions. H.E. Bates was born in Rushden, Northamptonshire. He began his working life as a solicitor's clerk, provincial journalist, and warehouse clerk. His first play, The Last Bread, and his first novel, The Two Sisters, appeared in 1926. He is one of the greatest exponents of the short-story form. Manuscripts by Bates, especially of this early date, are quite scarce on the market.
