Barbara Shapiro notes in her article 'Pissarro as Printmaker' (Apollo, November 1992, p.295-300) that Pissarro frequently discounted the first state of each print as these had often been sent to Degas for his opinion and retained by him. Several of these proofs were sold in the Degas studio sales. One of these proofs, presumably sent Degas for his comments, was sold in these rooms on 2 December 2003.
Furthermore, Delteil divides the edition of 14 impressions into an intermediate state 2a before the addition of 15 slanting drypoint lines beneath the woman on the right. A few scarce proofs (3 or 4 at most) bear the note 2eme etat and are numbered. The edition of the third state with the drypoint additions (as in the present work) is therefore ten.
