I find that my drawing relates to my sculpture in two different ways. Firstly there are the drawings I do from the model. Sometimes they may be studies for portraits - but more often they are done for their own sake, when, perhaps, I am interested but prevented by time and circumstances from doing a sculpture. Also, I keep on drawing the heads I see around me - in the street or on the tube - and often I improvise upon these drawings in small sculptures" (exhibition catalogue, Cardiff, National Museum of Wales, Welsh Committee of the Arts Council, Welsh Drawings 1963, p. 13).
