The correct title should read 'Chorister, with John Day up, at Doncaster'. The reference to Six Mile Bottom, which is near Newmarket, is due to the Herring family living there at the time. The jockey is shown in the colors of the Marquis of Cleveland, later created 1st Duke of Cleveland.

Lot Essay

Chorister was a bay colt, foaled in 1828, the property of the Marquis of Cleveland. He was got by Lottery, out of a mare by Chorus. In 1830 at York in the Spring, for two years old colts at 8 st. 5 lbs, he won the sweepstakes of £450, beating Mr G. Walker's chestnut filly Victoire, second; with betting starting at 6 to 4 against Chorister. The following year in 1831 he won the York 200 sovereigns beating Mr Houldsworth's chestnut mare Fortitude. At Doncaster, by old John Day he won the Great St. Leger of £2125 beating The Saddler ridden by T. Nicholson. At Northallerton ridden by Lye Chorister won the Cup, two miles carrying 7 st. This was Chorister's last appearance on the Turf.
