Mr. John Forth was Frederick's jockey and trainer. He was over 60 years old when he won the Derby at Epsom and he later trained a second Derby winner for Mr. Gratwicke when he was nearly 80 years old. This painting is the best likeness to Mr. Forth seen in recent years.

Lot Essay

Frederick was a bay colt bred by the Earl of Egremont in 1826, got by Little John out of a mare (bred at the Hampton Court paddocks in 1815). Frederick was sold to Mr G.W.K. Gratwicke in 1828 at Tattersall's. He won the Derby at Epsom in 1829 ridden by Mr. Forth for a purse was £2650, beating the grey colt The Exquisite. Later in 1829 he was not placed in the St. Leger at Doncaster and he did not run in 1830. He ran a few times in 1831 but then retired to stud where he did not get anything of note.
