Lot Essay

Combat, Mr Forster's brown colt by Defence, at fours years came in first in The Tally-Ho Stakes of 25 sovereigns each for horses and thoroughbreds with gentleman riders at the Pytchley Hunt Meeting, Northampton Course, May 28 1837. He won the Granby Handicap at Croxton Park, on April 6; was third in the Bath Stakes at the Bath Spring Meeting April 19, won the Ladies' Silver Cup, and was fourth in the Gloucester Stakes at the Gloucester Meeting on July 12.

A later smaller version dated '1838' was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 3 June 1994, lot 59 ($18,400).
