The Baron was a chestnut colt foaled in 1842 by Birdcatcher out of Echidna. He won the 1845 St. Leger at Doncaster. In the same year he won the Cesarewitch at Newmarket.
He was trained by John Scott, the foremost public trainer of the day, who ran the famous Whitewall Stables at Malton in Yorkshire. Scott holds the distinction of training sixteen winners of the St. Leger, a record that is likely to stand for all time.
As a stallion, The Baron will be remembered for siring the legendary Stockwell, known as the Emperer of Stallions, who won the 2,000 Guineas and St. Leger before becoming champion sire on seven occasions and got the winners of seventeen Classic races. The Baron also sired Rataplan who won a staggering total of 42 races.
