Lot Essay

As a purser with the Orient Steam Navigation Company, Basil Ede made frequent visits to China and Japan, and the familiarity of the artist traditions of the East informs his art. For fourteen years Ede travelled throughout America fulfilling a commission from the Warner Collection to portray all the birds of the federation. He has exhibited throughout Britain and America, and numbers H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh amongst keen collectors of his work. Following a serious stroke in 1989, Ede now paints almost entirely in oil.
