Lot Essay

In the early 1850s Herring was much preoccupied with animals and their offspring and the resulting paintings were extremely popular. A series of nine aquatints titled The Mothers was issued by Fores of 41 Piccadilly in 1854 to 1855.

Herring exhibited a Mare and Foal at the Portland Gallery in 1854 as number 278, priced at thirty guineas.
